About Our School

Commodore Options K-12 is a public school in the Bainbridge Island School District supported by student application for enrollment and family choice. The core tenets of all programs are student voice, choice, parental involvement, multi-age classrooms, developing the self-directed learner, and a commitment to student growth. Commodore Options Schools is an umbrella school that houses three programs: MOSAIC Home Education Partnership, Eagle Harbor High School, and the Odyssey Multiage Program.

When looking at what creates powerful learning communities, Commodore embraces the best practices of innovative education.  We are a cluster of programs where knowing your child is our number one priority. Research on best practices in learning is the cornerstone of our instruction. Through multi-age, multi-year teaching, your student and his or her teacher will build a relationship over time that reflects a comprehensive understanding of your student's needs. We believe that the heart of learning develops citizens who are self-directed and care about their peers, their community and their world.

Our Programs

Eagle Harbor High School

Eagle Harbor High School is a 9-12 public program of choice within the Bainbridge Island School District housed within Commodore Options School. We run on a block bell schedule that matches Bainbridge High School so that we may share classes and school activities. As a small school, EHHS creates a learning community where every student is an essential part of the school, allowing students and staff an opportunity to know each other over an extended period of time. We encourage parent involvement, and use individualized programs, seminar-style classes and independent study advisories to support student growth.

Odyssey Multiage Program

Odyssey Multiage Program is a K-8 education choice program within the Bainbridge Island School District housed within Commodore Options School. Odyssey emphasizes a multi-age learning environment and high parent involvement. Our program was founded on the belief that all students can become motivated and self directed, and that parent involvement inside and outside the classroom is key to academic success.

MOSAIC Home Education Partnership

MOSAIC K-8 Home Education Partnership is a K-8 public program of choice within the Bainbridge Island School District housed within Commodore Options School. Mosaic offers students a personalized, non-traditional learning environment where students and parents have a voice in determining what and how they learn. The majority of student instruction is at home with the parents as the primary educators. Full-time enrolled students receive support from a certified teacher during monthly meetings and students attend on-campus enrichment classes two days a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We are schools of choice, and believe that there is not one model of school that meets all student learning styles. Just as when students look at colleges, some select large universities and some select small colleges. Students select our programs because they flourish in the small schools model of learning.

  • No! We are public school programs of the Bainbridge Island School District.

  • Yes, we have students who participate in sports at Woodward and Bainbridge High School as well as a number of club activities.

  • Our students select Commodore because of our learning opportunities, student-centered instruction, small learning communities,  and strong teaching teams. We are not the traditionally viewed "alternative school" where students who need help are sent. Our best testimony is in our graduates, who are now attending in a broad range of schools from the Naval Academy, Notre Dame, Brown, Evergreen, Cornell to Seattle Community College, Arts Schools, and apprenticeships.

  • We find our students are very successful transitioning into larger schools. Our graduates regularly tell us how well prepared they are for college. Because our programs emphasize the self-directed learner, our students are capable learners in any setting.

  • It depends on the services that are written in the student's IEP and the services available at the school. Legally, students must receive the services as specified on the IEP. However, not all Special Education services are available at each school. A student's IEP team determines the level of services and placement. There may be instances where a student's IEP team determines that the level of services is not offered at the Option School; therefore, the student's placement will be at a location where the IEP can be appropriately implemented. Any placement changes must be made by the IEP team in accordance with federal, state, and district procedures.
